The Renal Care Unit of the Teaching Hospital Peradeniya was formally declared open by the Minister of Health Hon. Dr. Keheliya Rambukwella on the 7th of January 2022.

The dream of having such a unit at the Teaching Hospital Peradeniya was finally realized ……. years after commencement of the building. It is with great pride that the Peradeniay Kidney Protection Society records the great contribution made by the society towards this project. Rupees 58 million worth building material, equipment, furniture, medical curtains and other essential items was given to this project by the society.

The Society gratefully acknowledges the donors whose generosity was the key to the success of this project. The details are given in the chart below.

Our next project is to acquire a vehicle for the use of the kidney patients.

The Peradeniya Kidney Protection Society (affiliated to the Teaching Hospital, Peradeniya) was established in February 2020 as a nonprofit, charitable, voluntary organization by a group of well-wishers who joined together with a goal to help patients with kidney diseases seeking treatment at the Peradeniya Hospital.

Large numbers of patients with kidney disease depend on the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital for their treatment. Peradeniya is the largest center that care for children with kidney disease. It is also the center that performs the largest number of kidney transplants in children having performed nearly 150 kidney transplants since 2004. This center provides care for children from all parts of the country. These patients and their families have to undergo many hardships with regard to transport and accomodation. Treatment of adults with kidney disease has also now commenced at the Peradeniya Hospital. At present hospital does not have a separate kidney unit to look after these patients. In this regard a kidney unit with facilities for dialysis and intensive care is being constructed with the support of the Sri Lanka Army.

The government spends a large sum of money to care for these patients. However, the patients and their families need more additional care and support, which the government cannot be expected to provide. We have identified and recognized this additional need and hence embarked on this endeavour of establishing the Peradeniya Kidney Protection Society.

The Peradeniya Kidney Protection Society was established with the blessings of the Director and the Chief Incumbent of the Sri Subodharama International Budhdhist Center, Chief Sanga Nayaka of the Udarata Amarapura Sector of the Central Province and the Chief Sanganayaka of Australia, Mahopadya Vishva Kirthi, Dhamma Visharadha, Pandithacharya, Most Venerable Wattegama Dhammawasa Nayaka Thero. Guidance for this endeavor was provided by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Director of the Teaching Hospital Peradeniya, Senior Committee members of the Kandy Kidney Protection Society, Senior Consultants and the Consultant Paediatric & Adult Nephrologists of the hospital. We have a group of dedicated senior and experienced members in the committee who provide a voluntary service to the society.

Our society is committed to provide patients with kidney disease, the quality of life they deserve and the protection and security they require. Our aim is also to address the welfare of their families, support the building programme of the kidney unit, assist purchasing necessary equipment and consumables for the unit when required , conduct awareness and training programmes and assist research activities related to kidney diseases. These activities will not be possible without the support of well-wishers.

Your gift of love in the battle against kidney disease is greatly appreciated by us and will go a long way in touching the lives of those affected.

Late Prof. Chandra Abeysekara MBBS. (Cey.), DCH (Lond). FRCP (Lon), FSLCP
