The “Peradeniya Kidney Protection Society” affiliated with Teaching Hospital Peradeniya (THP) was formed in February 2020 by us to help Kidney Patients receive treatment through the hospital.
There are two sections under Renal Care Unit THP namely, Paediatric unit & Adult unit. The Paediatric unit is the largest in Sri Lanka doing transplants and dialysis for children below 15 years of age.
In March 2021, we initiated a welfare project to grant financial assistance to patients with economic difficulties. Initially, an amount of Rs. 3000/00 was given to a patient monthly from the sponsorships received for this purpose. However, with the present-day economic situation, we look forward to giving them Rs. 5000/00 a month. Presently we are sponsoring 84 patients out of which 60 are children. We keep receiving requests for financial support but cannot accommodate them due to a shortfall of funds. Therefore, we are looking for some donors to gap the shortfall for at least a minimum period of 2 to 3 years. The donors could contribute monthly or in bulk and we take responsibility for distributing monthly.
A donor could sponsor the “x” number by donating the number multiplied by 5000/00 monthly or the monthly amount into the number of months in one go. We will retain the monies in our welfare account and distribute them evenly.
The two Nephrologists in charge of the two sections recommend that patients really in need of financial assistance and we obtain recommendations from the relevant Grama Niladhari and the Social Services Officer of the Divisional Secretariat as well.
Initially, we had a system to allocate a patient to a donor/and allow the donor to remit to the patient's given bank account directly but we had to give up due to;
- Some patients succumbed
- Some patients diverted to attend clinics at their nearby hospitals and we have no trace of them
- Donors contributed only for a limited period and we had to look for new sponsors
- Some patients do not follow medical advice and do not attend clinics
- Donation does not reach the patient / the account holder misappropriates the money
- Patients approach and burden the donor with many other social and economic issues
Therefore, now we strongly request donors to remit monies to our bank account (Savings account 86658926 of Peradeniya Kidney Protection Society maintained at Bank of Ceylon – Super Grade branch – Peradeniya) as agreed and we undertake to disburse them to the identified patients monthly. We do not accept any CASH payments to our hands under any circumstances.
Further, we expect donors to specify the sum, and period undertaken for sponsorship and the planned mode of transfer of monies to us initially. Also, we need the name, contact number/email for our records. Further, it is a must to let us know immediately when the amounts are deposited/transferred online or any other mode for us to reconcile our accounts/records.
